Quartz slowly replaced beds of fibrous crocidolite and kept the silk: tilt the stone and a band of light rolls across it like a cat’s eye opening — chatoyancy, from the French for cat. Roman soldiers carried engraved tiger eye into battle to borrow the animal’s nerve.
