Obsidian is lava that cooled too quickly to become mineral — pure volcanic glass, edges knappable sharper than surgical steel. Aztec priests read the future in mirrors of it; one of those mirrors, John Dee’s, still lies in the British Museum. A stone with no crystal structure at all, and more history than most that have one.
