Aquamarine and emerald are one crystal in two moods — the same beryl lattice, lit by iron instead of chromium. Roman sailors carried the sea-colored stone for safe passage home, and it has been the gem of calm water for two thousand years. At hardness 7.5–8 it outwears nearly everything else we string: a museum piece built for daily life.
