Amber is not stone but time: resin that bled from Eocene forests, hardened, and outlived the forests, the rivers, and very nearly the continents. The Greeks noticed that rubbed amber pulls feathers to itself and named it elektron — the word electricity descends from this gem. It weighs almost nothing and warms in seconds against skin, the way nothing mineral does.
