What Does 750 Mean on Jewelry?
Plate I — What Does 750 Mean on Jewelry?

The number 750 denotes gold fineness: 750 parts gold per thousand, or 75% gold, commonly called 18-karat gold. A lone stamp is not independent proof that an item is authentic solid gold. Read the full marks, the material description and any supporting test or hallmark information together.

How Do You Read a 750 Mark?

The Birmingham Assay Office’s hallmark guide explains fineness and the accompanying marks. A typical UK hallmark combines sponsor, fineness and assay-office marks. The assay-office symbol identifies where testing happened, not necessarily where the jewelry was made.

Photograph all visible marks, including their surrounding shapes. If you only find “750,” ask what evidence accompanies it; do not convert that observation into a worldwide certification claim.

Is 750 the Same as Gold-Plated?

No. A gold fineness description and a statement that an item is gold-plated answer different questions. “Gold-plated” describes a coating; it should not be silently read as solid gold throughout.

When buying a bracelet, ask which components the material description covers. A claim about one finding does not establish the construction of every other part. For a specific design such as Golden Thread, check the actual listing and request clarification wherever the component description is incomplete.

What Does 925 Mean?

The same Assay Office guide identifies 925 as the fineness notation for sterling silver: 92.5% silver. As with a gold notation, understanding the number and authenticating a particular object are separate steps.

A useful seller question is: “Which part is marked, what is the stated metal throughout that part, and is there a full hallmark or examination supporting the description?” Retain the answer with your purchase record.

Does a Metal Mark Tell You How to Wear the Bracelet?

A fineness mark does not provide a care guarantee for beads, coatings, stringing or the complete assembly. Ask for the care instructions matching those components.

For stacking, check where pieces rub or catch and separate them if you notice contact or discomfort. We recommend removing jewelry before swimming or household cleaning when its full construction and care limits are unknown. Do not infer “scratch-proof” or “waterproof” from a purity number.

How Should You Use This Information When Buying?

Start with the material you want and the price you are willing to pay. Compare the seller’s wording with the actual marks and available evidence. If a solid-gold claim matters to your decision and remains uncertain, ask a qualified jeweler or assay service about an appropriate examination.

Keep symbolic preferences separate from material verification. Choosing a gold or silver appearance can be a personal style decision without assuming either color proves authenticity or a particular effect.

FAQ

Does a 750 stamp prove that jewelry is solid gold?

The notation states a fineness. By itself, an unverified stamp does not authenticate the object; examine the complete marking and supporting evidence.

Can I shower in gold-plated jewelry?

Follow the maker’s instructions for the complete piece. We recommend removal when those instructions are unknown; a gold description is not a waterproof rating.

Can weight tell me whether it is plated?

Do not rely on how heavy a complete piece feels. Ask for a precise construction description and an appropriate examination if necessary.

Does the metal change a crystal’s symbolism?

Symbolic associations are personal or cultural interpretations. They do not verify what metal or gemstone is present.

Will a stamp always remain readable?

Do not assume a permanent guarantee. Photograph a mark while it is readable and have an unclear mark examined rather than guessing.

What is millesimal fineness?

It expresses precious-metal content in parts per thousand. The 750 gold notation corresponds to 75% gold, commonly described as 18-karat.

Can I mix gold and silver pieces?

You can choose that appearance. Check fit and contact during wear; do not assume that mixing any pieces is automatically free of rubbing or snagging.

Does gold-colored hardware prevent citrine from fading?

A hardware description does not establish the gemstone’s stability. Follow the bead and whole-piece care instructions rather than relying on the color of the metal.
