What Jewelry Does Not Tarnish?
Plate I — What Jewelry Does Not Tarnish?

Crystal and gemstone jewelry does not tarnish because minerals cannot oxidize the way metals do. Quartz-family stones — amethyst, citrine, clear quartz — sit at Mohs 7 hardness and keep their color and surface without polishing or special storage.

Why do crystal bracelets never tarnish?

Tarnish is a metal problem. Sulfur and oxygen in the air react with metal surfaces — silver darkens, brass goes dull. Crystal beads are minerals, not metals, so the reaction does not apply.

A quartz bead is silicon dioxide with a specific gravity of 2.651. It formed under geological pressure and already sits in its most stable chemical state. Air, skin oils, perfume, and soap pass over a quartz surface without altering it.

This matters for bracelets in particular. A bracelet sits against skin all day, gets wet at every hand wash, and bumps into hard surfaces. A metal bangle accumulates tarnish from that exposure. A crystal bracelet does not.

If the surface is stone, not metal, tarnish never applies.

Which stones are hard enough for an everyday bracelet?

Every gemstone resists tarnish, but a bracelet also needs scratch resistance. The International Gem Society rates clear quartz at Mohs 7, and because amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, and rutilated quartz are all quartz varieties, they share that rating.

Stone Mohs Hardness Daily-Wear Concern
Clear quartz 7 Minimal
Citrine 7 Heat-treated stones may fade with prolonged heat
Moonstone 6–6.5 Perfect cleavage — can split on impact

Mohs 7 is the practical cutoff for a bracelet you wear without thinking about it. Stones at that level resist scratches from desk edges and keys without dulling.

Moonstone sits at Mohs 6–6.5 with perfect cleavage in two directions. I'd skip moonstone for a daily bracelet you never take off — one hard knock against a counter edge can crack a bead along that cleavage plane.

What can still go wrong with a crystal bracelet?

Crystal beads will not tarnish, but other durability concerns show up in practice.

Heat-treated citrine may fade when exposed to heat. A citrine bracelet left on a hot car dashboard for hours can gradually lose color. The Dusk & Citrine (10–11.5 mm, $95) pairs citrine with amethyst and phantom quartz — the non-citrine beads hold their color regardless, so the bracelet keeps its look even if the citrine shifts over years of heat exposure.

Moonstone's perfect cleavage in two directions makes it more vulnerable to impact than any quartz variety. For rough-use days, switch to a quartz bracelet.

What should you look for in a tarnish-free bracelet?

Pick a quartz variety. Amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, rutilated quartz, phantom quartz — all sit at Mohs 7 and none will tarnish or scratch under normal wear.

The only part of a crystal bracelet where tarnish is even possible is the metal hardware — clasps and spacers. The stone beads that cover most of the surface stay unchanged. The Golden Thread (10.5 mm, $115) pairs gold rutilated quartz with 18k gold-plated hardware. The Violet Mist (10 mm, $90) uses purple phantom quartz with 18k gold-plated hardware. In both, the quartz dominates the wrist-facing surface — and quartz does not tarnish.

FAQ

Can I wear a quartz bracelet in the shower?

Quartz at Mohs 7 is not damaged by water or soap. The stone beads are safe to shower with. If the bracelet has metal spacers or clasps, drying those parts after helps maintain the metal finish.

Why do crystal bracelets break if crystals are so hard?

Hardness measures scratch resistance, not impact resistance. Moonstone at Mohs 6–6.5 has perfect cleavage in two directions, meaning a bead can split from a single sharp impact. Quartz-family stones at Mohs 7 lack this cleavage weakness and hold up better to daily knocks.

Is moonstone durable enough for a bracelet?

Moonstone works for light daily wear, but its Mohs 6–6.5 hardness and perfect cleavage in two directions make it a poor choice for gym sessions or heavy manual work. Remove it before any activity with hard impacts.

Will citrine lose its color over time?

Heat-treated citrine may fade with prolonged heat exposure. Normal body heat and room temperatures do not cause fading. Keep a citrine bracelet away from hot surfaces like car dashboards and radiators.

Do crystal beads need polishing like silver jewelry?

No. Silver tarnishes because it reacts with sulfur in the air — polishing removes that tarnish layer. Crystal beads do not react with air, so there is nothing to polish away. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough.

Can sweat or perfume damage crystal beads?

Sweat and perfume do not damage quartz-family stones. A surface at Mohs 7 is chemically stable enough that skin oils and alcohol-based fragrances pass over it without leaving marks or residue.

What is the most scratch-resistant crystal for a bracelet?

All quartz varieties — amethyst, citrine, clear quartz, smoky quartz, rutilated quartz — share Mohs 7 hardness. No single quartz type is harder than another, so any quartz bracelet offers the same scratch resistance.
