Can You Help Me Figure Out Which of My Crystals Are Real vs Fake?

No glass or plastic fake passes all three physical checks. One quartz variety fades when reheated — and moonstone needs an entirely different test.

Can You Help Me Figure Out Which of My Crystals Are Real vs Fake?
Plate I — Can You Help Me Figure Out Which of My Crystals Are Real vs Fake?

Telling real crystals from fakes comes down to checking hardness, density, and internal growth marks. No glass or plastic simulant passes all of these, because only a natural crystalline mineral combines those properties at the correct values.

Does a Scratch Test Actually Work on Bracelet Beads?

Hardness is the fastest single check. Every member of the quartz family — amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, clear quartz — registers Mohs hardness 7 (International Gem Society). A quartz bead at Mohs 7 scratches glass. If a bead sold as quartz slides across glass without leaving a mark, the bead is softer than the claimed mineral.

Test on the drill hole where any mark stays hidden. One limit: hardness proves a bead is hard enough to be quartz, not which variety it is. A dyed quartz bead passes the scratch test the same way an undyed one does. For that distinction, color distribution under a loupe matters more than a blade.

What Should Real Crystal Beads Look Like Inside?

Natural quartz grows underground over geological time, and underground formation leaves marks glass cannot replicate. The International Gem Society lists color zoning and two- and three-phase inclusions among the diagnostic features of natural quartz. Negative crystals are another recognized inclusion type.

Glass imitations contain round gas bubbles. Real quartz inclusions look nothing like bubbles — they form angular shapes and sharp internal fractures. Those fracture planes sometimes refract light into rainbow colors, which is why one Reddit buyer's instinct was right: "internal rainbow crack-thingies" are a reliable sign that a stone is crystalline.

For moonstone, the key is directional glow. Moonstone has perfect cleavage in two directions (International Gem Society), so moonstone's shimmer shifts as you rotate the bead. A glass imitation glows the same from every angle.

Why Are Fake Crystal Bracelets So Common?

Nearly every gemstone sold in the United States is imported. U.S. net import reliance for gemstones was 99% of apparent consumption every year from 2021 through 2025 (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, 2026). The same USGS report lists glass and plastics among the substitutes frequently used in place of natural gemstones. At that import volume, bracelet beads — sold in bulk without individual grading — are among the easiest products to substitute.

Which Bracelet Stones Get Faked Most?

Quartz varieties and moonstone draw the most questions online. The table below lists published physical constants from the International Gem Society — the same values a gemologist checks:

Stone Specific Gravity Key Authenticity Marker
Clear Quartz 2.651 Color zoning, two- and three-phase inclusions, negative crystals
Citrine 2.651 Heat-treated citrine may fade with heat exposure
Moonstone 2.56–2.59 Perfect cleavage in two directions; directional shimmer

The International Gem Society notes that heat-treated citrine may fade when re-exposed to heat. That color shift is diagnostic — glass never fades the same way. The same hardness checks that work for clear quartz also catch fake amethyst, because amethyst and citrine both sit at Mohs 7 with specific gravity 2.651.

A bracelet like Dusk & Citrine (10–11.5 mm, $95) pairs citrine with amethyst and phantom quartz on one strand. Having quartz-family stones side by side makes comparison easier — the stones share the same hardness and density, so any bead that feels off is the outlier.

Can You Verify Beads Without Damaging Them?

Density is the most underused nondestructive test. Weigh a bead dry, then lower the bead into water on a thread and measure the displaced weight. Divide dry weight by displaced water weight to get specific gravity. Clear quartz and citrine should read close to 2.651; moonstone falls between 2.56 and 2.59.

For phantom quartz — beads with a ghost-like second crystal visible inside the main one — hold the strand up to light and compare bead to bead. Frost & Fortune (10 mm, $115) uses green phantom quartz, and I'd question any strand where every phantom looks the same. Natural crystal growth does not produce identical beads.

The same logic extends to other stones. Aquamarine has a different set of physical constants, and verifying whether an aquamarine bracelet is genuine follows the same test structure with different target values.

FAQ

Is heat-treated citrine still a real crystal?

Heat-treated citrine is natural quartz with color modified by heat. The International Gem Society notes that heat-treated citrine may fade with repeated heat exposure, so gradual fading in sunlight is actually evidence of real quartz rather than glass.

Do rainbow fractures inside a bead prove the crystal is real?

Rainbow fractures form along natural stress planes in crystalline material and are a strong authenticity signal. The International Gem Society lists two- and three-phase inclusions among diagnostic features of natural quartz. Round bubbles point to glass.

Why do clear quartz and citrine have identical density?

Both belong to the quartz family. Clear quartz and citrine share Mohs hardness 7 and specific gravity 2.651. The same scratch test and density check apply to every quartz variety.

Can I weigh a bead to check if it is real?

A specific-gravity test works well. Weigh the bead dry, measure the water the bead displaces, and divide. Clear quartz should read near 2.651 and moonstone between 2.56 and 2.59. A result far from the published value raises a flag.

What is the single easiest test for a quartz bracelet?

The scratch test. Quartz at Mohs 7 scratches glass. Run the test inside a drill hole to keep any mark hidden. If a bead cannot scratch glass, the bead is not quartz.

Does real moonstone always glow blue?

Not always — moonstone's glow color varies. The diagnostic feature is direction, not color. Moonstone has perfect cleavage in two directions, so moonstone's shimmer shifts and disappears at certain angles. A glass imitation glows evenly from all sides.

Are glass and plastic the only materials used to fake crystals?

The USGS lists glass and plastics among common gemstone substitutes. Dyed natural stones are another category — a bead can be real quartz but artificially colored, which a hardness test alone will not reveal.
