How Can You Tell if a Clear Quartz Bracelet Is Real or Fake?
Plate I — How Can You Tell if a Clear Quartz Bracelet Is Real or Fake?

You can tell a real clear quartz bracelet from a fake through a scratch test — real clear quartz sits at Mohs 7 hardness and will scratch a glass plate. Glass copies warm up faster in the hand and tend to be perfectly flawless inside, while genuine quartz almost always has tiny natural inclusions.

Why Is Fake Clear Quartz So Common?

Fake clear quartz is common because glass is frequently substituted for natural gemstones. The USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries (2026) lists glass and plastics as gemstone substitutes and notes that simulants are frequently swapped in for natural stones. U.S. net import reliance for gemstones was 99% of apparent consumption every year from 2021 through 2025 — nearly all gemstone material sold in the U.S. crosses a border, and bead bracelets are rarely tested along the way.

At retail, glass and genuine clear quartz can both be labeled "clear quartz" and look identical in a product photo. The difference shows up when you test them.

What Does Real Clear Quartz Look Like Inside?

Real clear quartz almost always has tiny imperfections visible under strong light. The International Gem Society identifies three types of natural inclusions in clear quartz: color zoning, two- and three-phase inclusions, and negative crystals.

Color zoning shows as faint bands where one side of a bead looks slightly milkier than the other. Two-phase and three-phase inclusions are microscopic pockets of liquid and gas, sometimes with a tiny solid crystal trapped inside. Negative crystals are angular voids that catch light at sharp angles.

Glass shows none of these. A glass bead is either perfectly clear or contains round air bubbles. Round bubbles are the fastest tell — quartz does not trap air in neat spheres.

How Do You Test a Clear Quartz Bracelet at Home?

Five at-home checks separate real clear quartz from glass without special equipment. The scratch test is the single most reliable check.

Test Real clear quartz Glass imitation
Scratch test Quartz at Mohs 7 scratches a glass plate Glass bead cannot scratch glass
Temperature Feels cold against skin for several seconds Warms to body temperature quickly
Flashlight Faint veils, color zoning, or wisps visible Round bubbles or perfectly clear
Heft Specific gravity of 2.651 — feels dense for its size Lighter at the same bead diameter
Hand loupe Angular voids and fluid-filled pockets No inclusions or only round bubbles

The scratch test works because clear quartz at Mohs 7 is harder than a glass plate. Press a bead firmly against the plate and drag — real quartz leaves a visible mark on the glass. If the plate marks the bead instead, the bead is not quartz.

Gemologists measure refractive index for final confirmation — clear quartz reads 1.544–1.553 per the International Gem Society — but the scratch test and flashlight check catch most glass fakes at home.

Does Bead Size Make Fakes Easier to Spot?

Larger beads are easier to inspect because inclusions and temperature differences are more obvious at bigger diameters. In a 7mm bead, natural color zoning can be hard to see without a loupe. At 9mm and above, a phone flashlight reveals veils and zoning without magnification.

I'd go with 9mm or larger if confirming authenticity matters to you, because the visual evidence is just easier to read at that scale. A bracelet like the Clear Water (9mm, $95) uses chunky nugget-cut clear quartz where each bead's internal character is visible to the naked eye. The First Frost (8mm, $105) uses faceted clear quartz — faceting scatters light across cut surfaces, which can make inclusions harder to see, but the scratch test and heft still identify real quartz right away.

FAQ

Can you test clear quartz with fire?

Applying a flame to a bracelet risks cracking the stone and melting the elastic cord. The scratch test gives a clear answer in seconds without damage — real clear quartz at Mohs 7 scratches a glass plate, and the result is immediate.

Is clear quartz the same thing as glass?

No. Clear quartz is crystalline silicon dioxide with a specific gravity of 2.651 and a Mohs hardness of 7. Glass is amorphous — non-crystalline — and softer. The two look similar in photos but respond differently to a scratch test or flashlight.

Why does my clear quartz bracelet have bubbles inside?

Round air bubbles are a strong sign the beads are glass. Natural clear quartz can contain fluid-filled inclusions, but those appear as irregularly shaped pockets, not perfect spheres. If you see neat round bubbles spread through a bead, that bead is likely glass.

Should real clear quartz feel cold when you pick it up?

Real clear quartz beads feel noticeably cold when first picked up from a room-temperature surface. Many collectors use the cold-touch check as a quick first test. It works best on beads that have been sitting at room temperature, not in sunlight or a warm pocket.

Can clear quartz be perfectly clear and still be real?

Gem-grade clear quartz with almost no inclusions does exist, but it is uncommon at bead-bracelet prices. Most real clear quartz beads show at least faint veils or slight color zoning under strong light. A full strand where every bead is water-clear and flawless is worth testing.

Does authenticity matter if I use clear quartz for meditation?

In crystal lore, clear quartz is often called the master healer and is traditionally associated with amplifying intention and clearing the mind. Practitioners who reach for clear quartz during meditation or energy work prefer authentic stone. Whether the distinction changes the experience is personal, but confirming what you are wearing takes one scratch test.

How much should a real clear quartz bracelet cost?

Clear quartz is not a rare gemstone, so genuine bracelets are accessible. At Dusk & Relic, clear quartz bracelets range from $95 to $115 depending on bead size and cut. A bracelet priced far below that range with perfectly flawless beads is worth checking with a scratch test.

Will a fake clear quartz bracelet scratch easily?

Real clear quartz sits at Mohs 7, which resists scratching from most everyday contact. If bracelet beads pick up visible scratches quickly during normal wear, they may not be quartz.
