Amethyst vs moonstone: which crystal bracelet is better for your mom?
Compare amethyst's scratch resistance with moonstone's June birthstone connection, plus bracelet materials, current prices and gemstone care.
Choose amethyst if your priority is the gemstone's greater scratch resistance and toughness, or moonstone for a June birthstone connection. Those gemstone properties do not establish the durability of an entire mixed-material bracelet.

Amethyst or moonstone: how do they compare at a glance?
| Criterion | Amethyst | Moonstone |
|---|---|---|
| Mohs hardness (scratch resistance) | 7 | 6–6.5 |
| Toughness (GIA) | Good | Poor |
| Light exposure | Sustained intense light may fade some specimens | Stable under light |
| Sudden temperature shifts | Can cause fractures | Can cause fractures |
| Cleaning (GIA) | Warm soapy water; avoid steam and heat | Soap and warm water; no steam or ultrasonic |
| June birthday gift route | Bolivian Dusk includes amethyst and freshwater pearl; pearl is a June birthstone | Moonstone is a June birthstone |
The gemstone care rows describe the stones themselves. They do not cover a bracelet's cord, metal parts or other gemstones.

What do hardness and toughness tell you?
Amethyst has higher scratch resistance and a better toughness rating than moonstone, but that is not a daily-wear guarantee for a bracelet. GIA gives amethyst a Mohs hardness of 7 and describes its toughness as good. GIA gives moonstone a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5 and describes its toughness as poor.
The Mohs scale compares resistance to scratching, not resistance to breakage. Moonstone has two cleavage directions, and GIA says strong impacts are a breakage risk.
Amethyst still needs care. GIA notes that quartz is a major part of ordinary sand and dust, so even amethyst needs protection against scratches. Neither stone's rating establishes the durability of the other materials in a mixed-stone bracelet.
What gives moonstone its changing glow?
GIA describes orthoclase moonstone's adularescence as a light effect whose appearance changes with viewing angle. Orthoclase moonstone contains intergrown orthoclase and albite feldspars, and light scattering at their layers produces this effect.
One labeling point matters when you shop. GIA treats "rainbow moonstone" as a trade name for certain labradorite rather than orthoclase. A trade name alone does not verify what a particular bead is, so ask the seller what mineral the beads are.
Does a June birthday change the answer?
A June birthday gives you a reason to consider moonstone or pearl. GIA lists June birthstones as moonstone, pearl and alexandrite. You could use that birthstone connection as a personal reason for the gift.
The Bolivian Dusk (11.5mm, $165) suits a June gift that also includes amethyst because its verified materials include amethyst and freshwater pearl. Its limitation is that the amethyst data do not establish the durability or care needs of the pearl-and-amethyst bracelet as a whole. The Happiness Is (11mm, $95) includes amethyst in a mixed-stone design at a lower price, but its overall durability likewise cannot be inferred from amethyst alone.
Pearl brings its own gifting questions, covered in what to know before giving a woman a pearl bracelet.
How much care does each bracelet ask of her?
The care advice differs for the gemstones, and neither set of instructions establishes a safe cleaning method for every bracelet component.
Amethyst: GIA recommends warm water with soap and advises against steam and heat. Its ultrasonic-cleaning advice includes qualifications for dyed or fracture-filled stones. Sudden temperature shifts can fracture amethyst, and sustained intense light may fade the color of some specimens. A shaded storage spot avoids that intense-light exposure.
Moonstone: GIA recommends soap and warm water and rules out steam and ultrasonic cleaning. Moonstone is stable under light, but high heat and sudden temperature shifts can cause fractures.
The Little Planet (10mm, $95) lists aquamarine and moonstone among its materials; the supplied specifications do not establish their proportions. The moonstone guidance applies to that gemstone, not to the aquamarine, bracelet cord or metal finish.
Choose amethyst if…, choose moonstone if…
Choose amethyst if greater scratch resistance and good gemstone toughness are your priorities: consider Bolivian Dusk for amethyst with freshwater pearl, or Happiness Is for a mixed-stone option. Neither bracelet has a verified whole-bracelet durability rating here.
Choose moonstone if a June birthstone connection is your priority: Little Planet includes moonstone and aquamarine. Keep moonstone's impact and temperature-related fracture risks in mind rather than treating its light stability as a durability guarantee.
If neither stone feels right, the broader question of where to find a beaded bracelet worth giving covers other routes.
FAQ
Is rainbow moonstone the same as moonstone?
GIA describes rainbow moonstone as a trade name for certain labradorite, while orthoclase moonstone contains intergrown orthoclase and albite feldspars. A label alone does not confirm what a specific bead is, so ask the seller.
Does a higher Mohs number mean the bracelet won't break?
No. The Mohs scale compares resistance to scratching, not resistance to breakage. GIA rates amethyst's toughness as good and moonstone's as poor, but those ratings do not establish the durability of an entire mixed-material bracelet.
Can my mom leave an amethyst bracelet in the sun?
Avoid sustained intense light: GIA warns that it may fade the color of some amethyst specimens. Moonstone, by contrast, is described by GIA as stable under light.
Can she wear the bracelet in a sauna or hot tub?
Taking it off avoids exposing these gemstones to relevant temperature risks. GIA warns that sudden temperature shifts can fracture both amethyst and moonstone, and that high heat can fracture moonstone.
Can she clean a moonstone bracelet in an ultrasonic cleaner?
GIA advises against ultrasonic and steam cleaning for moonstone and recommends soap and warm water. That advice covers the gemstone, not the cord, other stones or metal parts of a bracelet.
